About The Proper Knot Founders
Kate Schulze Eggleton was raised on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. She spent her childhood sailing, fishing, surfing and boating, so a business in the marine industry was a natural fit for Kate.
Kate Schulze Eggleton
Kate is the Chief Executive Officer and Lead Designer at The Proper Knot. Kate graduated from the College of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she earned a degree in Display and Exhibit Design. After graduation, she began her career in New York City, where she continued to grow her expertise in design for eight years. She returned to the Lowcountry in 2014 and began focusing on yacht interior design and concierge services. Kate has been praised by her clients for capturing their vision and paying meticulous attention to details for all their design specifications. Her exceptional taste is reflected in all her past projects and her sharp personality gives her an edge in the competitive design industry. Her extended portfolio and years of experience in commercial and residential design bring a unique talent to the boating interior design industry.
Chip Eggleton
Chip discovered Charleston after purchasing a Hood 42’ racing sailboat, which was left in disrepair at a local marina. He visited so often during the refit, that he ended up falling in love with the city and decided to call Charleston home. Chip and a great crew ultimately guided the yacht to a class win during Charleston Race Week in 2016.
Volunteer work in MUSC’s pet therapy program at the Institute of Psychiatry ultimately inspired a mid-life career shift. Chip decided to fully indulge his passion for helping others and applied to the Citadel’s graduate program, ultimately earning a master’s degree in Psychology and Clinical Counseling and becoming a member of the Psi Chi honors society.
Chip’s experience in the business world, coupled with techniques learned treating patients grappling with difficult life decisions, are helpful for a wide range of people. These skills helped facilitate a shift into industrial / organizational psychology & ultimately the opportunity to support Kate in the yachting industry.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain
